As a parent to a child with Down syndrome, I know how frustrating it is when your child has trouble communicating. ACDS (www.acds.org) has started to use iPads as a tool to give children who have trouble communicating a voice as well as using it as a teaching tool. What a great idea - so tough considering how many wonderful ideas there are! To join the conversation, the Kenya Education Fund (KEF) is a NY and Nairobi based NGO tasked with allowing capable, motivated but financially disadvantaged Kenyan youth to successfully complete a high school education and obtain the skills necessary to improve their communities and break the cycle of poverty in Kenya. We do so by matching students to private individuals who pledge to sponsor them for the entire duration of their schooling. The $600 a year (or $50 a month) covers tuition, room and board, textbooks and supplies, uniforms, shoes and mosquito nets. We also conduct mentoring workshops during their Form 1 & Form 3 years (9th and 11th grade respectively; speakers are invited to discuss a variety of subjects including HIV/AIDS prevention, safe-sex practices, avoiding peer pressures and the importance of performing well in school. At the conclusion of their high school education, recent graduates attend a Form 4 Workshop - the Career, Reproductive Health & Entrepreneurship Workshop (CREW) aimed to round out their high school experience and help them plan for the next step (whether university or the work-force) by helping them build a resume, supplying them with an email address, learning interviewing skills and planning so as to make the most of their futures. We are happy to say that we currently sponsor 500 students in more than 240 schools across Kenya!

Hello, I agree with a previous comment that there are many good projects in this contest! It is wonderful that so many people and organizations are working toward a better world. My organization, All Hands Volunteers performs disaster relief work all over the world since 2005, using volunteers. Presently we are building homes in Cagayan de Oro, the Philippines, for communities impacted by Typhoon Washi. We are striving to keep the communities intact, but are placing the homes on higher ground. I'm really excited about The SOLD Project's idea to fund Human Trafficking Awareness classes in Thailand, and so glad to see such a quality organization participating in this competition. I've seen and participated in their work firsthand and it's truly incredible what they're doing to prevent child exploitation. Their work has already had a lasting impact for hundreds of children and their families and this new idea to train the children themselves to teach others is brilliant. We are affiliated with a small NGO that is a registered 501 3 c meaning that any donation is tax deductible (in this case since it is a "contest" that may not matter). What does matter is that 100% has a direct impact on these deserving kids (we absorb ALL administrative costs . . . not a penny is spent on anything but the nine kids). I wish to acknowledge EDGE OF SEVEN in Nepal. Thus is a fantastic organisation that is doing wonderful work building scholls in the moutainous regions of Nepal. The communities come together with the EDGE OF SEVEN organisers and achieve excellent facilities such as school hostels and schools. If we can come all th way from New Zealand to fund and support such projects then they must be worth a zillion votes. Naturopaths Without Borders is working to establish a naturopathic medical clinic in Haiti. This facility will allow us to offer natural health care to a population with very little access to wellness services. Our plan includes daily clinic services, an herbal medicine garden, nutrition lessons, community health workers. The mission of Naturopaths Without Borders is to provide naturopathic health care to impoverished communities while empowering those communities through education, supporting growth and cultivating sustainable resources. We need to establish a permanent clinic in Haiti where medical options are in short supply. Most Haitians lack access to regular medical care and have no access to natural care options. Our doctors frequently see diseases of malnutrition or simple medical problems that become worse from lack of care. Naturopathic Physicians use a variety of methods including nutritional supplements, herbs, acupuncture, as well naturopathic adjustments in order to help the body heal. These less invasive methods are often free of side effects, inexpensive, and sustainable.

SHORT TITLE: “FILL THE EMPTY CHAIR” HANDLE: VOLUNTEER VISITORS ASSOCIATION WEBSITE: http://www.volunteervisitorsassociation.org/ THE IDEA: The Volunteer Visitors Association, also known as VVA, is a newly formed non-profit organization that seeks dedicated volunteers to visit the isolated and home bound in our community. Our services will be provided primarily to nursing homes in Northeastern Pennsylvania. We are a grass roots movement that has developed a strategic plan to recruit volunteers on a large-scale basis to provide comforting visits to the elderly, who otherwise would have none or very few at the end of their lives. According to statistics from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, more than 50% of nursing home residents have no living close relative, which directly relates to the estimate that 60% of nursing home residents have no visitors. Volunteer Visitors Association was founded by area hospice professionals and volunteers who saw the profound need in our community for volunteers to visit our elderly living in nursing homes, hospice facilities and their homes. While we cared for and visited our hospice clients, we realized that there are too many individuals who are without visitors. A credible organization was needed to act and to fill this void. The organization would provide training and emotional support for all involved, as well as provide the umbrella protection that we felt only a well organized non-profit corporation could. THE SPECIFICS: We enlist our volunteers through coordination with our local churches, college campuses, businesses and philanthropic organizations; bulletin distribution; information seminars; advertisement via billboard, tv and radio; as well as news and media releases. We utilize the Internet for outreach and maintain an active web site. Volunteer selection is based on an interview process and careful screening to determine if potential candidates can make this commitment of time and love. We maintain a strong professional support staff to counsel and teach our volunteers. We are a volunteer based organization. We maintain no salaried positions. Our funds will be derived through grants, fundraising events and individual donations. After the VVA’s annual operating expenses are disbursed, all remaining funds will go directly for the needs of the people being visited in an effort to enhance their everyday lives. Examples of potential expenditures: a tv for a resident who is without one and lacks the means to purchase one, clothing for residents in need, snacks, gifts and sundries to raise all residents’ spirits. If general funds are sufficient, large gifts will be donated to the facilities we serve, so all residents can benefit, i.e., a movie screen and projector for movie nights, hiring entertainment, etc.. All funds are to be audited by our Board of Trustees and a certified public accountant. It is an additional goal of VVA, other than providing comforting visits, that seniors will receive gifts small and large to brighten their days. The Volunteer Visitors Association’s constant and primary mission will always be to relieve loneliness, restore dignity and renew a connection to the outside world for residents residing in our area nursing home facilities. Through compassion, respect, and recognition of the needs of the elderly and the support of our community, we will strive to enhance the everyday lives of all our citizens. Law Enforcement Against Prohibition is an international organization of current and former drug warriors who know from front line experience the futility and cruelty of the War on Drugs. We want to legalize, regulate and control all drugs--to treat drug abuse as a health rather than a criminal issue.
