Many of the animals we rescue come from 100 miles or more away, this funding will help us transport them to Critter Camp and will help pay for food and supplies for the new rescues & the rescued animals already here. Critter Camp cares for over 300 small companion animals like ferrets, hedgehogs, rabbits, fennec foxes, parrots, sugar gliders, prairie dogs, lizards and much more! Critter Camp is the only 501c3 licensed small exotic pet sanctuary in the US caring for unadoptable small unusual pets only. Many are elderly, chronically ill, disabled, aggressive or excessively fearful of people; some were going to be euthanized at other shelters. Some have been passed around to numerous shelters most of their lives. Here they are safe & loved.

Billboards are a great way to reach thousands of people a day with our message of greyhound protection and adoption from Florida’s thirteen dog tracks. Clear Channel Digital Outdoor offers a network of 140 billboards in 12 Florida counties. All billboards are positioned in high-profile locations and designed to reach commuters on heavily-traveled expressways and thoroughfares. Each billboard displays eight rotating advertisements for 8 – 10 seconds each. Our greyhound ads would be seen for six or more times a minute! Three designs have been created for this campaign. These appear below. Each message is intended to be informative, appealing and to promote greyhound adoption. A dedicated web page will also be launched.

Orangutan Outreach is helping to build a state-of-the-art Orangutan Rescue Center in Ketapang, West Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo). We know of nearly 60 orangutans waiting to be rescued. They are being held as illegal pets and are being trafficked in illegal smuggling networks. These orangutans will most likely die if they are not properly cared for by trained vets. If they get too big they will be killed & eaten. We need to rescue them NOW. The problem is many of these orphaned orangutans are in remote villages many hours away by boat. It costs a fortune to rent a speedboat & captain, so we want to have our own boat. The boat will pay for itself after 5 or 6 trips... and it will allow us to save precious orangutan lives...

Harambee Youth Kenya is the home of 17 incredible teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds. We are Harambee USA, Inc., the umbrella organization that sponsors and facilitates the Center. Our goal is to positively impact their futures. An aquaponics system will provide food security for the HYK community, as well as, an education in sustainable agricultural methods. Aquaponics is a close-looped system that connects hydroponic grow beds with a fishery in order to replicate a self-sustaining, miniature ecosystem that produces food for consumption. Our mission is to educate these young men so that they may reach out and aid their community's development at large.

The mission of Naturopaths Without Borders is to provide naturopathic health care to impoverished communities while empowering those communities through education, supporting growth and cultivating sustainable resources. We need to establish a permanent clinic in Haiti where medical options are in short supply. Most Haitians lack access to regular medical care and have no access to natural care options. Our doctors frequently see diseases of malnutrition or simple medical problems that become worse from lack of care. NDs use a variety of methods including supplements, herbs, acupuncture, chiropractic adjustments in order to help the body heal. These less invasive methods are often free of side effects, inexpensive, and sustainable.

Human Trafficking Awareness & Prevention Classes in Thailand

Since 2007, The SOLD Project has been preventing human trafficking & child sexual exploitation in Thailand through education & community development. In the past, we've worked with a local organization to host human trafficking awareness programs at our Resource Center. At this summer's biannual Parent Meeting, we'd like to hire our partner to train the older girls in our program to lead the awareness courses themselves. With this grant, The SOLD Project will be able to host trafficking awareness events for the entire community, purchase costumes & sound equipment, & train our students to take a peer-to-peer trafficking awareness course on the road to 2 – 5 of their local schools, reaching hundreds of at-risk children. Thanks for your vote!

The goal of The Nashville Mobile Market (NMM) is to open the door to a healthy diet for residents of food desert neighborhoods, and thereby decrease the incidence of diet-related chronic health conditions. NMM acts by selling healthy food from a 28-foot trailer that is modified to function as a mobile grocery store. It stops five days per week at ten unique locations within food desert neighborhoods in East, South, and North Nashville, TN. In the market, customers are offered fruits, vegetables, lean meats, dairy products, whole grains, and select non-perishables. Groceries are sold at typical grocery store prices, and all profits are used to run the mobile market. In this way, NMM can make a self-sustaining impact on community health.

A Voice for Kids Who Can't Speak 24 Pink-talk-bubble-tail

Apple's iPad is much more than a toy. It is a tool that can give a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. In our preschool that serves children with Down syndrome, autism and other developmental disabilities, an iPad can help our children by giving them the opportunity to speak, learn and participate. Much more effective and less expensive than augmentative communication devices, an iPad can give these children the ability to express themselves and can serve as a tool that will enable them to participate in classroom activities with their peers. If we won the $2,500 we would be able to supply five (5) classrooms with an iPad for our special education teachers and help change the lives of the children and families that we serve.

The Supply builds a network of low cost community secondary schools in the slums of Nairobi because secondary schools simply don't exist. In November 2010, 24 students from the primary school in the Lenana slums were ready to take the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education Examination; unfortunately, one of the head teachers ran away with the registration money and the students were disqualified. They had to pay one more year of tuition, re-do Grade 8 with the little money they had, and were forced to re-take the examination in November 2011. Originally, this test meant nothing as there was no secondary school to go to, but we have built the first secondary school there and will begin servicing slum children beginning in Jan 2013.

With college costs increasing and no end in sight, it is necessary to create alternatives to the institutional model of learning. By using the UnCollege brand and the momentum behind a book launch, we will create a very selective program for the most talented youth who want to pursue their dreams outside of the framework of college. A thorough coaching, internship, and guided life experience will maintain the highest standards and compete with the most elite education. The uncurriculum will focus on The Effective Self, Hackademics (learning how to optimally learn), Common Understandings (a liberal education with the cosmopolitan canon), Common Experiences (a sequence of life experiences that serves as a rite of passage).

The funds of this challenge would support the annual Chapter Training Conference, where undergraduates from all LTI college chapters nationwide meet to train new chapters and to discuss best practices. The LTI program has been running its annual Leadership Program at MIT for the past five years, and we are in the process of starting new LTI chapters at Yale, UMass Amherst, Boston College, and UC Berkeley. Our goal is to create 10 new college chapters and to impact over 1,000 high school students by 2015.

All Hands Volunteers is dedicated to assisting disaster-affected communities by empowering volunteers. AHV is working hard in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines to build new homes for victims of Typhoon Washi. This project hires skilled local workers for the technical aspect and donated volunteer labor for the rest. Volunteers are the backbone of the job! The $2,500 award All Hands can win with your vote will fund 125 volunteer days ($2,500/$20/day). The $20 covers the logistical cost of volunteer labor. Each volunteer works 7 hours/day, and the value of each hour of labor is $18.04, you get $126.28 worth of work out of each $20! So, the multiplier benefit of the initial $2,500 is $15,785! That’s a LOT of GOOD coming from winning this award
