The Idea

Joyce Preschool provides children from diverse ethnic, linguistic, and economic backgrounds with developmentally and culturally appropriate preparation for school success. We seek to expand programming to reach school-age children during the summer months through a partnership with a local church.

The Specifics

We will implement Spanish immersion summer camps held at Park Avenue Church, in conjunction with an urban garden project for children and their parents sustained by church and preschool staff and volunteers. Our partner plant approach will set the tone for a symbiotic, supportive atmosphere, as we plant vegetables which can be incorporated into global cuisine for meals shared by church goers and Joyce’s clientele. Partner plants, such as sweet corn and green beans, depend on each other for structural support and nutrients. Such is the case with Joyce Preschool and Park Avenue Church; through our partnership, children continue learning during the summer months while both organizations work to build cross-lingual bonds in our urban garden.
