NCYLS: cultivating youth leadership potential to create the next generation of changemakers

idea by mdoctors

The Idea

NCYLS cultivates youth leadership potential to inspire positive social change. By engaging youth and developing their leadership skills with a focus on service, we feed the need for talented leadership in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to create the world in which we wish to live.

The Specifics

NCYLS offers FREE high-impact leadership training to high school sophomores in Northern California. We are eager to expand our outreach & offer more students the opportunity to realize their true potential by giving them the tools to create lasting change in their communities.

There are many leadership opportunities for students throughout California & the nation, but few are free. Not only would we use additional financial resources to proactively recruit underserved populations, but we seek to provide funded transportation for students who live prohibitively far from the seminar location to attend. An increase in student participants will increase the ripple effect of these changemakers' service within California & throughout the world.

I had the best weekend of my life at NCYLS. NCYLS brought me so much confidence and inspiration. It made me realize the difference I can make on others with the little thing, the simple kindness. Now, when I'm going back and trying to make a change in the community and environment around me, I can be confident that my action is not going to waste; it is making an impact on at least one person out there.

I have volunteered at NCYLS for the past 7 years as a Team Leader. I found this organization through a very interesting path. Not being from northern California myself, I was not aware of the various youth leadership programs available. However, I did work closely with high school youth through my job at Score! One of my high school staffers was truly exceptional at her role. She tutored other students 4-14, discussed performance with parents, and trained other staffers how to improve their effectiveness. When I asked her how she had developed her incredible leadership skills she referred me to NCYLS. I attended a seminar as a speaker and have been volunteering ever since. The impact this seminar has on the students (and staff!) is simply astounding. You have my vote without a doubt!

I was in NCYLS and it was an OUTSTANDING experience!!! I still remember everything I learned and experienced in it. It gave an impact in my life and I still carry it and will continue to carry it with me. As soon as I was able to share my experience with my peers, I didn't hesitate to tell them about everything I've learned. Whether it be skills and knowledge or the fun and silly chants and songs we did, I didn't think twice of sharing it with them. I love NCYLS and if I was given a chance to join again, I totally would :)

NCLYS is the best. I have been lucky enough to be a team lead and wittness first had the amazing changes in the students in a very short time. Their lives are changed forever for the better as has mine.

“My involvement with NCYLS started in 2010 as a team lead, and I was hooked with the first “Outstanding.” I love how NCYLS directly impacts high school sophomore and grows them into confidence leaders and changes their lives, including mine! It’s very easy to volunteer my time because I admire and enjoy every person associated with this organization and very proud to be a part of this movement!!!”

I've seen first hand the positive impact this seminar has on students. I've followed some of them through the past year and watched them grow into strong leaders that act as a force for good in their community. It is an amazing organization that helps students discover that they have the power to change their world.

I love how NCYLS is completely free and non affiliated! So often I see $200 here or $500 there for students to participate in anything worth while. Furthermore, organizations that are able to offer them free of charge are typically funded by a political party or a religious organization and end up pushing their beliefs on to the students. NCYLS pushes being passionate about whatever the students are passionate about and gives them tools to do something GOOD with it!

NCYLS is a fantastic organization that I love dedicating my time, energy and money to. The best part about NCYLS is seeing students with leadership potential come to the seminar somewhat unsure of themselves and later emerge as strong, confident leaders instilled with passion, skills and knowledge about exactly how they can take action to make a difference in their own lives, their schools and their communities. it is truly why I'm a 20 year volunteer for this organization. I love NCYLS!
